DEXE v4.85
~~~~~~~~~~
Introduction
~~~~~~~~~~~~
A long time ago, I used to use a program called HOTDir that would
produce sorted, colour, multi-column directories. I became dependant on
it, but it grew obsolete, and I could find no new versions. To answer
that need, I wrote DEXE.
The purpose of DEXE is to provide a directory listing that, through
the use of color, enables the user to quickly see what is in the
directory. There is immense convenience in being able to scan through
the directory for all lightblue entries than to pick out extensions from
a monochromatic list. Also, by using multiple columns, more files are
made visible. Most directories will fit on one screen.
Files
~~~~~
When I released this version of DEXE, it was in a file called
DEXE48E.ZIP. I don't care what the ZIP you received was called, but if
you are giving copies of the program, you MUST include the following
files:
D.EXE - The Main Program
D.DOC - This File.
It doesn't take up much space, so please just leave the doc file around.
I put a lot of work into this program, so let me introduce it.
Recognized Extensions:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXE, COM, BAT, BTM
DB?
WK?, WQ?
DOC, TXT, NFO, *READ*.*
PAS, TPU, TPL, C, CPP, OBJ, H, ASM
BAK
ZIP, ICE, ARC, LZH, ARJ, PAK
GIF, MAC, PIC, PCX, IFF, TIF, WPG
STM, VOC, SND, ROL, MUS, MOD, WAV
Disclaimer
~~~~~~~~~~
DEXE works on my machine. This is a good thing since I write these
programs for myself. If it works on your computer, so much the better.
It may not. If not, let me know, maybe I can write a version that does.
If it turns your file allocation table into a collection of randomly
alligned particles of magnetic media, your loss. I guarantee nothing!
If something happens as a result of this program, I will not be held
liable. USE THIS PROGRAM AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Switches
~~~~~~~~
If no column switch is selected, the default is 4 column. If no sort
key is specified, DEXE will sort by name.
/# Select number of columns output (2,3,4,6)
/p Disable screen pause
/n Sort directory by Name (Sub-dirs listed at beginning of list)
/f Sort directory by Name (Including Sub-dirs)
/e Sort directory by Extention
/d Sort directory by file Date
/s Sort directory by file Size
/x List only executable files (EXE, COM, BAT and BTM)
/c Check for EXE compression. DEXE currently recognizes PKLITE 1.03,
LZEXE 0.91, DIET 1.0 and TINYPROG 3.3. If you have others, send me
a copy.
/r Reset DEXE
/t Force colour output.
/, use "Kilo-Colour" (Explained below. Just try it, it's obvious...)
/h List Options
Sorting
~~~~~~~
The primary purpose of DEXE is to display sorted, coloured
directories. There are 4 sort options; You can sort by name (Default,
or /n), by extension (/e), by size (/s), and by date (/d). When sorting
by names, the /f option will cause subdirectory names to be sorted as
well, normally they are listed at the beginning.
Columnar Output
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
DEXE displays its directories in multiple columns. The default is
four columns, but you can use switches again to select other options.
DEXE supports 2,3,4 and 6 column output. Just put the number of columns
as the switch (i.e. /2, /3, etc..).
Executable Listing
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The /x option lists only those files that are executable (EXE, COM,
and BAT).
Compressed Executable Detection
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are many different Executable Compressor's out there. Rather
than manipulate several different detectors, I set the goal of making
DEXE the single needed directory program. The /c option will make DEXE
check for files that have been compressed with PKLITE, LZEXE 0.91,
TINYPROG 3.3 and DIET. Contact me if your favourite compressor isn't
on this list.History
~~~~~~~
improved. File limit was increased to 600.
V4.60 - Partial redesign due to hard drive crash
V4.70 - Bug Fixes. File limit increased to 1000 files/directory.
V4.82 - TINYPROG 3.3 CED enabled.
V4.83 - Bug Fix
V4.85 - Thanks to Drew Miller for pointing out a major bug and
suggesting a simple fix.
Miscellany
~~~~~~~~~~
I am proud of my work. I hope you use DEXE and like it. I, Sunil
Sebastian, permit anyone to use DEXE, for free, under the following
conditions:
1) This documentation file (D.DOC) MUST accompany the executable file.
2) You must send me a note, giving your name, address, employment, and
any opinions or suggestions you may have.
If you abide by those points, you are a registered user. Of course, I
desperately need money, and if you do donate, I will do my best to keep
you informed of any new releases or other utilities that I put out.
I want to hear from you. If you think that DEXE is a useful
program and you feel that this calls for remuneration, send me money.
I accept cash, checks, and money orders. If you like it, but don't want
to donate, write me anyway, just so that I can see how far DEXE goes.
If you have suggestions, contact me. If you have problems, well, no
guarantees, but send me a situation report, and I'll see if I can help.
Thanks to Don Peterson in Alabama for some thoughtful suggestions.
Version 5 will encorporate the majority of them.

Other Maelstrom Utilities:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I've done work on a number of programs, and so just to organize them,
and track them, I created Maelstrom Systems. I am a programmer, with
professional experience. If you have a suggestion for a utility, or
need a custom program, contact me.
The Maelstrom Line includes:
Disk Meter Have you ever wondered how much of you hard drive has
been used? This program displays handy graphical
readings of drive use, as well as giving tallies of used
and unused space. DMET.EXE
Stufit2 A File Splitting utility. Divide into a set number of
files, by file size, or just to fill the disk.
STUFIT2.EXE
Tree Delete A utility to prune a branch off your directory tree.
Fast, simple, and informative display. TDEL.EXE
